Legendary Swaps Rights For ‘Batman Vs. Superman’ To Get ‘Interstellar’

Legendary’sexit from under the Warner Bros. umbrellais one of those insider Hollywood business deals that made waves in studio boardrooms, but not anywhere else. Their latest deal is kind of the same thing – it won’t affect fans at all – but it’s still a very interesting and kind of awesome turn of events.

Warner Bros. and Paramount are co-financing Christopher Nolan’sInterstellar, which just started filming. Warner Bros. and Legendary teamed up onMan of Steel, which opened earlier this summer. Nolan has a great relationship with both companies and, in the deal to leave Warner Bros., Legendary negotiated a trade. They gave up their stake in theMan of Steelsequel, rumored to be calledBatman vs. Superman, to keep their name on Christopher Nolan’sInterstellar.

The Wrapbroke the news of this baseball card-style swap. And while it won’t have much resonance when either film hits theaters, it does offer a bit of insight into the state of each film. One might think, because Legendary choseInterstellaroverBatman vs. Superman, they feel Nolan’s film is going to make more money. That could very well be the case.

However, more likely is whatever money either makes,Interstellarwill make it first. That filmalready has a stellar, Oscar-winning cast, prime release date and is in production. It’ll also be released at least 6-8 months beforeBatman vs. Superman, which currently only hasa few names attachedand an incomplete script. By choosingInterstellaroverBatman vs. Superman, Legendary can reap the benefits of a major blockbuster, and finally end the relationship with Warner Bros. instead of waiting for Summer 2015. It’s safer, easier play.
